Yarn-dyed fabric is woven from yarn that was dyed first, which is how a woven stripe or check gets its colour. Piece-dyed fabric is woven undyed and dyed as a whole piece afterwards. That suits solid colours and lets one base cloth be dyed into many shades.

What is yarn-dyed fabric?

Yarn-dyed fabric is woven from yarn that has already been dyed. Each warp and weft thread can be a different colour, so the colour pattern is built in as the cloth is woven. Stripes, checks, plaids and chambray are all made this way.

What is piece-dyed fabric?

Piece-dyed fabric is woven first, usually from undyed yarn, and the whole length of cloth is dyed afterwards. It comes out in one solid colour. Because the same base cloth can go into any dye bath, a piece-dyed range can offer one fabric in a full shade card.

Which should you choose?

Choose yarn-dyed when the design needs more than one colour woven in. Choose piece-dyed when the design is a solid colour or a single-colour texture, such as a piece-dyed dobby, or when you want the same cloth in several shades.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a fabric is yarn-dyed or piece-dyed?

Pull a thread from the cut edge. In a yarn-dyed fabric each thread is coloured all the way through, because it was dyed before weaving. In a piece-dyed fabric the thread was undyed when woven and the colour was added to the finished cloth. A woven stripe or check is almost always yarn-dyed.

Is chambray yarn-dyed?

Yes. Chambray is a plain-weave fabric with a coloured warp and a white or undyed weft, which is what gives it its mottled look. That effect needs the yarn dyed before weaving.

Can a piece-dyed fabric have a pattern?

It can have a woven texture, as a piece-dyed dobby does, but the whole piece takes one colour. Multi-colour stripes or checks need yarn-dyed yarn or printing.
